Green Herons Find Plenty of Fish at Green-Wood Cemetery
On May 2, 2021, I visited Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn and was treated to a beautiful green heron (Butorides virescens) fishing from the edge of Crescent Waters. The heron displayed the long, long neck that gets extended when fishing from the edge of the water. I returned to Green-Wood on May 13 and saw two green herons on Sylvan Waters, being harassed by a great egret.

Because the green heron at Green-Wood Cemetery on May 2 was so cooperative and posed for me, I took lots of photos.
The green heron in the slideshow below was also seen at Green-Wood Cemetery. The bird put on quite a prancing show on August 10, 2021.
Green Herons in Clove Lakes Park
We watched two or three green herons (Butorides virescens) looking for fish along the shores of Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island on July 16, 2018. (We saw two at the same time, but aren't sure if the second was the one we saw later a little north on the shore.)

Lost in Wolfe’s Pond Park
On September 17, 2017, I walked from the Staten Island Railroad through the north part of Wolfe’s Pond Park on Staten Island. Of course, I got lost, and stumbled upon a beautiful green heron on some water not on my map. I was able to photograph this gorgeous bird for a half hour before finally finding my way across Hylan to the main pond.

A Green Heron at Azalea Pond
Azalea Pond in Central Park had a delightful green heron visitor on June 17 and 18, 2016. I took a lot of photos and video, because this bird visits so infrequently, but yet is such a gorgeous animal.
The heron stood on this little branch over the water both days, regularly dipping into the water, pulling out a little fish, then gobbling it down. He kept doing this, as if he were at the movies chomping from a bag of popcorn.
We looked for the green heron the following days, but he wasn't to be seen. Maybe he went looking for a new pond, having finished off all the fish. Hope he comes back.
