In September and October, I visited Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn and was ever so happy to see that a young great blue heron had discovered the Tranquility Garden and the pond stocked with beautiful koi. While these expensive fish were not put in the pond for the heron to eat, the heron didn't know that, and since the pond was not covered, the heron would sit above the water or stand in the water, deciding which tasty morsel he would grab for lunch.
Of course, there were those at the pond who thought the fish were meant for contemplation, and on one visit, after I watched the heron do a walkabout the pond, a woman chased the heron away, despite the fact that I was filming the bird and she really had no right to harass the wildlife. Other people told me that the man in charge of the pond was constantly chasing the heron away. I admit I was happy that the heron kept coming back.
I really enjoyed visiting this bird, who flew to Valley Water whenever chased away from the koi pond, and watching another young great blue heron who fished at Dell Water and Crescent Water a little farther away in the cemetery.
